Abbaye Royale de Fontevraud

Castles & Country Houses, Gardens & Parks
Abbaye Royale de Fontevraud, 13 ha, is one of the largest surviving monastic cities from the Middle Ages, and was founded in 1101 by Robert d'Arbrissel.

Since 1975, it is housing the Centre Culturel de l'Ouest, which organizes various cultural activities. The medieval gardens have been recreated.

The Abbey has been inhabited by a number of historic figures, such as Eleanor of Aquitaine, Queen of France and then of England thanks to her marriage to Henry II. She settled down here to run the affairs of the kingdom after the death of her husband. She passed away here, achieving a very high age for her time (over 80).

After the French Revolution, the complex of monastic buildings served as a prison from 1804 to 1963.
