Ballenstedt Castle
Castles & Country Houses, Gardens & Parks, Museums & Art Centres
Ballenstedt Castle, dating back to the 11th century as a monastery, was later the residence of Princes of Anhalt and Anhalt-Bernburg until 1945, being confiscated by the communists. Today it is owned by the town of Ballenstedt and open to the public, including a Film-museum.
During the 18th century it has been transformed several times, in particular when Ballenstedt became the official residence of the ruling prince, instead of Bernburg. It has also the oldest theatre of Saxony-Anhalt, linked to names like Franz Liszt and Albert Lortzing. Some well known and picturesque personalities had their residence here too, like the well to do Princess Friederike of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg and the author and painter Wilhelm von Kügelgen, whose house became a museum.
It is surrounded by a beautiful park.
