Castles & Country Houses, Gardens & Parks
Benmore Botanic Garden, today part of the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh, is covering 49 ha (120 acres) and is famous for its plants from all over the world, from the Orient and the Himalaya to North and South America.
The garden is surrounding Benmore House, and is located on former hunting grounds of the Dukes of Argyll.
The house and garden as we see them today were mainly developed in the 19th century by James Piers Patrick, a wealthy American, and James Duncan, the Greenock sugar refiner and philanthropist.
It was James Piers Patrick who planted the Redwood Avenue of Giant Sequoias.
