Castlewellan Castle Forest Park, 460 ha (1,136 acres) surrounding Castlewellan Castle, was acquired in 1967 by the Forest Service of the Department of Agriculture. It is used for Outdoor activities include camping and touring, walking, cycling, horse riding, fishing on the lake, canoeing and orienteering.
The estate was acquired from the Annesly family and includes also the National Arboretum and the Peace Maze.
Today, the castle is used as a Christian Centre.
