Castles & Country Houses, Museums & Art Centres
Château de Pierrefonds (12th century) is a "monument historique" since 1862 and is today managed by the Centre des monuments nationaux. It is open to the public.
Château de Pierrefonds dates back to the 12th century but was rebuilt by the Duke of Orléans from 1393 to his death in 1407. In 1617 it was destroyed by the Duke of Richelieu in his war against the Prince de Condé. Under Napoleon it became a "romantic ruin", but it was Napoleon III who ordered a complete restoration.
