Charleville Castle

Castles & Country Houses, Gardens & Parks
Charleville Castle was built early 19th century by Charles William Bury, Earl of Charleville, and was designed by Francis Johnston. Charleville is believed to be the most haunted building and grounds in Europe.

It has been visited by numerous paranormal investigators and psychics. It has also been used as a filming location.

Lord Byron held many parties here. The last private inhabitant was Colonel Howard-Bury (1883-1963), who inherited the castle from his mother. He was a British soldier, explorer, botanist and Conservative politician. He preferred, in later years, to live on his other estate Belvedere House (see: http://www.belvedere-house.ie) and on his estate in North Africa. Today the estate is managed by the Charleville Castle Heritage Trust.
