The Mauritshuis, a 17th century palace and once the residence of count Johan Maurits van Nassau-Siegen (1604 – 1679), governor of Dutch Brasil, houses the Royal Picture Gallery, including the best of 17th century Dutch and Flemish painting. Only 200 masterpieces are on display, which represents roughly 1/4 of the collection.
The visitors can admire works of Rembrandt, Vermeer, Rubens, Jan Steen, Jacob van Ruisdael, Pieter Breughel, Paulus Potter....
The collection originates from the collection of Stadholder William V, Prince of Orange, which was presented to the Dutch state by his son, the first king of Holland, King William I.
