Montacute House & Garden

Castles & Country Houses, Gardens & Parks
Montacute House is a grand Elizabeth mansion, built for Sir Edward Phelips and completed in 1601. It stayed with the Phelips family until it was sold in 1929. Today it is owned by the National Trust.

The house was almost empty when it got into the hands of the National Trust, except the Phelips family portraits and Lord Curzon's bath. The latter rented the house from 1915 until 1925.

At present much of the collection in the house came via a bequest from the industrialist Sir Malcolm Stewart. The Long Gallery, which is the longest of its kind in England, houses over 60 Tudor and Elizabethan portraits on loan from the National Portrait Gallery.

In addition there is a selection of the Goodhart samplers Collection on display.

The garden is Renaissance with later additions, in particular from the 19th century.
