The Musée de la Minéralogie, managed by the Ecole national superieure des mines de Paris (Mines ParisTech). The school was established under Louis XVI, whereas the museum started in 1794 as a Cabinet of Mineralogy. The latter has grown into one of the ten largest mineral collections in the world.

Out of the 100,000 specimens in the entire collection, the systematic collection accounts for around 25,000 of them. As of 2015, there were about 4,900 recognized mineral species, of which the museum holds around 2,900.
