Poeke Castle

Castles & Country Houses, Gardens & Parks
Poeke Castle dates probably back to the first half of the 12th century, whereas the present building is mainly from around 1750, including the renovations carried out in the 1870s. The castle is surrounded by a 56ha park, which is open to the public.

Over the centuries, the castle has been in the hands of several families. In 1597 the family Preud'homme d'Hailly bought the castle from a family called "Delrye". In 1872, Baron Victor Pycke de Peteghem (1835–1875), acquired the estate, and carried out important renovations, including the park.

The Baron's last descendants, mayor and Baroness Ines Pycke de Peteghem, were the last residents and owners. At her death in 1955, the Barones bequeathed the entire estate to a Catholic School charity, whereas In 1977 the castle and its 56 ha park became the property of the municipality of Aalter. Very recently the estate has been handed over to the Flemish government, who intends to restore it further and make it an attractive cultural and touristic venue.
