Turku Castle

Castles & Country Houses, Museums & Art Centres
Turku Castle, built as a defence fortification in the 1280's, it gradually changed into a grand greystone palace. Today there are changing exhibitions and visitors can enjoy guided tours.

In 1556, King Gustav Vasa named his son Johan Duke of Finland, who had built he renaissance halls.

In the 17th century, the Governor General of Finland Per Brahe held court in the Bailey, whereas the by then old castle became a prison. Later, it also served as a storehouse and as barracks.

In the 1941 the castle was left in ruins, due to bombings, but was fortunately reconstructed thereafter.
