Museums & Art Centres
The Wallace Collection one of the prime collections of 18th century French art, paintings, furniture, porcelain, sculpture and gold snuffboxes, complemented by masterpieces from the greatest European artists from the 16th to the 19th century.
The collection was brought together by successively the 4 extremely wealthy Marquesses of Hertford and Sir Richard Wallace, 1st Baronet, (1818 – 1890), the illegitimate son of the 4th Marquess. It was Lady Wallace who bequeathed the collection to the British nation in 1897, under condition that no object should ever leave the collection, upon which the state acquired Hertford House.
