Gardens & Parks
Batsford Arboretum, covering 22 ha (55 acres), has a unique collection of rare trees, shrubs and bamboos. It was created in the late 19th century by the 1st Lord Redesdale, the grandfather of the famous Mitford sisters.
It was part of Batsford House, which stayed until after WW I in the Mitford family. It was sold to Gilbert Alan Hamilton Wills, later the 1st Lord Dulverton. After WW II, it was his successor, the 2nd Lord Dulverton, who restored the arboretum and left it in the hands of the Batsford Foundation at his death in 1992.
The Batsford Estate covering 2,024 ha (5,000 acres), is still in the hands of the Wills family.
