The Museo dell’Ara Pacis is an archaeological museum housing the monumental altar dedicated to the goddess of Peace. It dates back to the 1st century BC. The current museum was completed in 2006 and designed by American architect Richard Meier.
The altar was commissioned by the Roman Senate in 13 BC, in order to honour Emperor Augustus, who returned to Rome after three years in Hispania and Gaul.
