Trautenfels Castle

Castles & Country Houses, Museums & Art Centres
The baroque Trautenfels Castle is today owned by the municipality of Stainach-Pürgg, and home to the Regional Landscape Museum of the Universalmuseum Joanneum, which presents the cultural and natural history of the Styrian Ennstal valley and Ausseerland region in 13 kaleidoscopic rooms.

Trautenfels Castle was first mentioned in 1260–62 and was acquired in the 17th century by Count Siegmund Friedrich von Trauttmansdorff, who had it transformed between 1670 to 1672 into a baroque palace, which was given the name of Trautenfels. Carpoforo Tencalla painted the high-quality frescoes on the second floor and in the castle’s chapel around 1670, while Alessandro Sereni created the stuccos.

The castle stayed with the Counts Trauttmansdorff until 1815, and  changed hands several times thereafter. It was bought by Count Josef Lamberg in 1878. In the 1980s the castle was acquired by the municipality of Pürgg-Trautenfels with help of the State of Styria. Later the municipality merged with the municipality of Stainach into Stainach-Pürgg.
