Monuments & Sites, Museums & Art Centres
The National Tile Museum dedicated to the azulejo, traditional tile-work of Portugal, throughout the centuries. The museum is housed in the Madre de Deus convent, founded in 1509. From the old convent remains a small Manueline (Portuguese Gothic and Renaissance style) cloister and an impressive church.
The church’s tile panels are stunning, and so is the gilded woodwork. The paintings above the tile panels are by Cristóvão Lopes (c.1516–1594) and André Gonçalves (1685 - 1754).
