The National Museum of Archeology, founded in 1893 by the archaeologist José Leite de Vasconcelos, features ancient art from the Palaeolithic, Roman, Arab and medieval times. The museum is housed in the Mosteiro dos Jerónimos in Belém, built in the Manueline style, and also has a renowned archaeological library.
