The Andor Semsey Museum is named after one of the greatest patrons of science and culture in Hungary, Andor Semsey (1833-1923). He brought together with his own funds the Meteriorite Collection of the National Museum, whereas he donated more than two million gold crowns to support Hungarian scientific life. In 1890 he established a foundation worth one hundred thousand forints for the benefit of the Hungarian Academy of Science...and much more.

History of Semsey Castle:

Before it came into the hands of András Semsey, the Balmazújváros estate had been in the hands of two Andrássy bothers, who died without an heir, so it returned to the crown, on which Emperor Francis I, donated the area to András Semsey, whose mother was an Andrássy. 

It was András Semsey who built the castle as it stands today. The center of the tympanum was once adorned with the coat of arms of the Semsey family, obtained from King Sigismund in 1401.

 Semsey Castle was used continuously until the end of the 19th century, after which it was used only for hunting, and mostly inhabited only by the property manager. 

The last owner, before its expropriation, was Count Andor István Semsey de Semse (1897-1977).
