Botanical Garden of the University of Coimbra was created in 1772 by the historic PM, The Marquis of Pombal, Sebastião José de Carvalho e Melo. The grounds, 13 ha, were given by Benedict monks.
As so often regarding the botanical gardens from earlier dates, this garden was also created for educational, scientific and medical studies.
