The Ateneum is one of the three museums forming the Finnish National Gallery featuring large collections from the Gustavian period of the mid-18th century to the modernist movements of the 1950s, as well as a handsome collection of international art, including works by such masters as Vincent van Gogh, Paul Gauguin, Paul Cézanne, Fernand Léger and Marc Chagall.

The museum building dates from 1887 and was designed by Theodor Höijer.
