Augustinial Monastery Herrenchiemsee (Old Palace), today a museum and art gallery complex, is a former Augustine monastery, coverted by Ludwig II as a palace, where could stay surveying the construction his New Herrenchiemsee Palace.
The King had acquired the island in 1873 as the building site of his future new palace.
The Old Palace has four wings. The East wing served as the King's private quarters. The South wing includes the magnificent Imperial Hall, the Garden Room and the Court Kitchen. The West wing is the former brewery tract and the North wing, the former prelacy, is now an art gallery.
