Bauska Castle

Castles & Country Houses, Museums & Art Centres
Bauska Castle is a castle complex originally built by the Livonian branch of the Teutonic Order. The castle was built in the 15th century. The added palace from the 16th century served as a residence for the Dukes of Courland.

During the Great Northern War (1700–1721), the whole complex was destroyed (1706) by the retreating Russians and left unrestored. It was more than 150 years later, in 1874, that Prince Paul von Lieven acquired the ruins and began the first restorations.

Today, the palace part has been restored and contains a museum about the history of the castle complex and the region.
