Durbe Manor

Castles & Country Houses, Museums & Art Centres
Durbe Manor, dates back to 1475, but the core of present building dates from 1671 and was further remodelled in 1870 by the owner of that time, Count Christoph Johann von Medem. The architect was Johann Gottfried Adam Berlitz. Today it houses part of the Tukums Museum collection, and  provides an insight into the culture of Baltic Germans.

The manor has been owned by several families during its history. It was used a summerhouse by Ernst Karl Philip von Grothus from 1789 to 1808, and from 1818 to 1838 the estate belonged to Count Medem. Later it was owned by Count von der Recke-Jaunpils, whereas from 1848 to 1920 it was owned by the Barons von der Recke. They had to leave, due to the Agrarian Reform.

The manor is surrounded by a landscape park, rotunda, and the longest pedestrian bridge in Latvia.

The ground floor replicates the historical interior with all the traditional furnished mansion rooms.

On the first floor, you will see cultural-historical exhibitions on current and little-known historical and artistic topics, such as the poet Rainis’ and his connection to Durbe Manor.

The manor offers excursions, educational programmes and competency-based learning programmes for pupils, and is a venue for classical music concerts and wedding programmes for newlyweds.
