Belsay Hall, Castle and Garden

Castles & Country Houses, Gardens & Parks
Belsay Hall, a Greek Revival mansion, was built between 1810 and 1817, and replaced Belsay Castle, on the same estate, as the residence of the Middleton family. The estate was owned almost continuously by the family from the 13th century, when Sir Richard de Middleton was Lord Chancellor to King Henry III.

Although the family moved out of the hall in 1962, the estate remains in their possession.

The Middleton Baronetcy, of Belsay Castle, was created in 1662, but became extinct on the death of the tenth Baronet in 1999.

Belsay has extensive gardens, covering 12 ha (30 acres), formal and natural, such as the Quarry Garden, with exotic plants.
