Castelo de Soutomaoir
Castles & Country Houses, Gardens & Parks, Museums & Art Centres
Castelo de Soutomaoir dates back to the 12th century, but was transformed into a summer residence in the 19th century the Marquis of la Vega de Armijo. Its park and gardens also date back to the 19th century.
Its park and gardens are rich in botanic species and include a collection of camellias and very old tress. The oldest are the eight-hundred-year-old chestnuts.
The Marquis’ niece, María Vinyals, who inherited the property, was a writer, a polyglot and a defender of women’s rights. She has written also about Castelo de Soutomaoir and historic events from the region.
In 1982 the castle was acquired by the Deputación de Pontevedra, who has executed restoration works and made it a museal attraction.
