Cliveden House, Hotel

Castles & Country Houses, Event, Film & Wedding Hire, Gardens & Parks
Cliveden, its grounds and house, have undergone many transformations since the first house was built in 1666 for George Villiers, 2nd Duke of Buckingham. It has known also an impressive number of historic owners including two dukes, three countesses, an earl, a Prince of Wales and the Viscounts Astor.

However it was the famous American-born, first female Member of Parliament and international socialite, and her husband Waldorf and Nancy Astor, who gave the place its final grand look as we see it today.

After the death of Nancy and her husband, the Astor family ceased to live at Cliveden in 1968, whereas the house and grounds were already donated by the couple to the National Trust in 1942, together with a large endowment.

The house is surrounded by 152 ha (375 acres) of gardens and woodland.

Today the grounds are an immense popular tourist attraction, whereas the house is leased out as a five-star hotel. Parts of the house are open to the public on certain days.
