The National Museum of Costume, opened to the public in 1977, contains a large collection of 18th and 19th century costumes, consisting mainly of private donations, as well as items which came from other museums.
The museum is located in Quinta do Monteiro-Mor or also known as the Angeja-Palmela Palace, named after the two families who owned the property. It owes its present outlook to the 3rd Marquis of Angeja, including also the botanic garden, laid out by Domingos Vandelli (1735 – 1816). He was an Italian naturalist, who has mainly lived in Portugal.
