Courtauld Gallery - Somerset Houe
Museums & Art Centres
The Courtauld Gallery, located in Somerset House, displays the art collection of the Courtauld Institute of Art and is best known for its 19th- and early 20th-century works. In addition, the Courtauld's collection extends back to the early Renaissance, featuring some 7,000 drawings as well as prints, decorative arts and a fine collection of sculpture.
In addition to the initial endowment by the indusrialist and art collector Samuel Courtauld (1876 – 1947) of the superb collection of Impressionist and Post-Impressionist paintings, the gallery also received other endowments such as Roger Fry's collection of 20th-century art as well as Lord Lee's Old Masters.
The Courtauld Institute of Arts is a self-governing college of the University of London specialising in the study of the history of art.
