Museums & Art Centres
The El Greco Museum, opened in 1911, is today the only museum in Spain dedicated to the painter El Greco (1541 – 1614). His true name was Doménikos Theotokópoulos and was born in Greece, hence his nickname 'El Greco'.
The museum owns its existence for a substantial part to patrons of the arts, Don Benigno de la Vega-Inclán y Flaquer, 2nd marquis of Vega-Inclan (1858-1942). One of its highlights is a complete series of 13 paintings portraying Christ and his disciples originally produced between 1610 and 1614 by El Greco and his workshop, for the Hospital de Santiago in Toledo.
The building recreates the forlorn home of El Greco.
