Galleria dell'Accademia di Firenze

Museums & Art Centres
The Galleria dell'Accademia di Firenze was founded in 1784 by Grand Duke Leopold of Lorraine and houses the "David" of Michelangelo, sculpted between 1501-1504. The Accademia Gallery houses not only the “David”, as there are more sculptures of the 'master', as well as an interesting collection of paintings from the Middle Ages, Renaissance and the early 17th century.

The original collection increased over the years due to the works of art coming from the suppression several religious orders, as well as from the closing of churches and monasteries.

In 2001 the Galleria opened the "Museo degli strumenti musicali", which houses the Collection of the "Luigi Cherubini" Conservatory of Florence. On display are around fifty musical instruments from the private collections of the Grand Dukes of Tuscany, the Medici and Lorraine, collected between the second half of 17th century and the first half of the 19th century.
