Hungarian Natural History Museum

Museums & Art Centres
The Hungarian Natural History Museum, established in 1802, houses the largest natural history collections of Hungary and the region, including departments of Anthropology, Mineralogy and Petrology, Geology and Palaeontology, and the Library.

In addition, the bird and mammal collections of the Zoology department, the Molecular Genetics Lab, the Paleontological Research Group and the Animal Ecology Research Group of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences/Hungarian Natural History Museum are also found here.

The museum was founded in 1802, at the time of the  establishment of the Hungarian National Museum, after Count Ferenc Széchényi (1754 - 1820), one of Hungary's most eminent aristocrats at the time, had donated his collection of books (1700 volume library), manuscript and coin collection, medals and antiquities to his country. In the same year, his wife, born Countess Juliana Festetics de Tolna (1753-1824), donated the very first natural history collection that contained selected and valuable minerals from Hungary.

In 1811 the first paleontological and zoological collection found their way to the museum, whereas many other donations followed ever since.
