Temple Newsam House, a Tudor-Jacobean country mansion and built in 1518, is surrounded by grounds landscaped by 'Capability' Brown. The House, with its fine collections, and grounds, are open to the public.
The Temple Newsam park, designed by Lancelot Brown in 1762, survives and is a good example of his style and also has a woodland garden, an 'Italian garden' and a walled garden.
It is the birth place of Lord Darnley, notorious husband of Mary Queen of Scots.
Temple Newsam House is part of Leeds Museums and Galleries.
