Trentham Estate

Gardens & Parks, Private Collections
Trentham Estate has been the Staffordshire seat of the Dukes of Sutherland. The house, today in ruin, dates from 1833–42, and was designed by Charles Barry, the architect of the Palace of Westminster.

Only the restored gardens, designed by Lancelot 'Capability' Brown survived.

Trentham Hall is one of the many country houses to be razed in the 20th century. The 4th Duke had it demolished after his offer to give it to Stoke-on-Trent was rejected.

However, the sculpture galley, clock tower, church and other building remained. The estate was  acquired by St. Modwen Properties , restored the gardens and created a shopping village.

Today the grounds contain the Italian Garden, the Upper Flower Garden, the River of Grass, the Floral Labyrinth, Show Gardens, the Trentham Hall Remains, the Monkey Forest and the Treetop Adventures.

Trentham Estate has become an important tourist and shopping attraction.
