The Whitechapel Gallery, opened in 1901, is one of the oldest public galleries, dedicated to contemporary exhibitions. The building, in British Modern Style was designed by the architect Charles Townsend.
In the 21st century (2009), the gallery incorporated the former Passmore Edwards library building.
