San Giovanni in Laterano
Monuments & Sites
San Giovanni in Laterano is not only the oldest public church in the city of Rome, but also the oldest basilica of the Western world. It dates probably from around 313 and is oldest of the four papal major basilica's.
San Giovanni in Laterano is still the official seat of the Roman Pontiff, whereas the popes installed themselves at the Vatican.
On the Piazza stands the Lateran Obelisk, the largest standing obelisk in the world. It was brought to Rome by Constantinus II. Pope Sixtus V had it installed in 1588 where it stands today.
