The Victor Emmanuel II National Monument (Altare della Patria) is a white marble monument honouring Italy's first king Vittorio Emanuele II and commemorates the unification of Italy in 1861. It was built between 1895 and 1911 on top of Palatine Hill and designed by Giuseppe Sacconi.
