Alatskivi Castle

Castles & Country Houses, Museums & Art Centres
Alatskivi Castle dates back to 1601 but was reconstructed in the late 19th century in Neo-Gothic style by Baron Arved von Nolcken, after the royal Scottish residence Balmoral (but smaller). Today the castle is a multi-functional entity with the Alatskivi Castle restaurant, special accommodation for eight guests in four suites, the Eduard Tubin (music composer) museum and offering exhibitions and handcraft workshops.

Alatskivi Castle is surrounded by various buildings and a forested park of 130 hectares (320 acres).

Since 1601 the castle has been in the hands of several families. In 1753 the estate came into the ownership of Count Otto Heinrich von Stackelberg and thereafter to his daughter Sophie, who was married to Baron Ernst Friedrich von Nolcken of Luunja. It was their eldest son, Arved Georg von Nolcken and his wife (born Baroness von Loewensterns) who build the castle as we know it today.

In our times Alatskivi Castle is owned by the local Peipsiääre municipality.
