Banqueting House, designed by Inigo Jones in 1622, is the only remaining part of the Whitehall Palace, the residence of English monarchs from 1530 to 1698. Whitehall Palace was destroyed by fire in 1619. Today Banqueting House is open to the public, where it can admire the ceiling, designed by Rubens.
The work was commissioned by Charles I, a great patron of the arts who extended the Royal Collection considerably. The subject was the glorification of Charles' father, James I, and was at the same time an allegory of his own birth.
Charles I was executed outside Banqueting Hall in 1649.
Banqueting House, is managed by the Historic Royal Palaces, ans is also a venue for cultural, corporate and private events, such as dinners, receptions, weddings...
