Bowes Museum was built as a public art gallery for John Bowes and his wife, Joséphine, Countess of Montalbo. He was the illegitimate son of the 10th Earl of Starthmore. However both he and his wife passed away before it opened in 1892.
The couple donated a considerable sum of money and 800 paintings. The museum has a stunning collection of Old Masters, decorative art, clocks, costumes, ceramics, textiles, tapestries, china, jewels...
It was constructed as a grand French chateau, surrounded by landscape gardens. The architects were Jules Pellechet and John Edward Watson. The gardens are managed as a public park.
In 2013 an unknown painting of Van Dyck, 'Portrait of Olivia Boteler Porter' was discovered, and has been restored.
