Bruce Castle Museum, a museum of local history, is housed in the 16th century Bruce Castle, and surrounded by Bruce Castle Park, which is today a public park. It is named after the initial owners of the land, the House of Bruce.
The castle has been the residence of Sir William Compton (prominent courtier of Henry VIII), the Barons Coleraine and Sir Rowland Hill (1795-1879), famous for his postal reform work that included inventing the Penny Black postage stamp and the Penny Post system in 1840.
Bruce Castle Museum has thousands of objects, photographs, films, oral histories and works of art in its collections
