Clandon Park House

Castles & Country Houses, Gardens & Parks
Clandon Park, built in the 1729s, has been the seat of the Earls of Onslow, until the house and gardens were given to the National Trust in 1956. However the 220 ha (540 acres) parkland remains in ownership of the Onslow family.

The house was displaying a superb collection of 18th century furniture, porcelain, and textiles from the collector Hannah Gubbay, acquired in the 1920th. Unfortunately in 2015, the house was badly damaged and the collection was greatly lost.

The National Trust has announced an ambitious plan to rebuild the house, and bring it to life again.

The two formal gardens stayed untouched and will be kept open to the public. There are several features, such as a sunken Dutch garden, a grotto, a Maori meeting house. The latter was brought in 1892 to Clandon by the 4th Earl of Onslow, who had been Governor in New Zeeland.
