The Sandringham Estate, Royal Residence
The house was built in 1870 by the Prince and Princesse of Wales, the later King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra. The main ground floor rooms are open the public, whereas the decor and contents remain very much as they were in Edwardian times.
The gardens, covering 25 hectares (60 acres), contain vast areas of informal planting, developed by each monarch since it was acquired.
Today the 243 hectares (600 acres) country park is every day available for visitors, free of charge.
The Sandringham Exhibition & Transport Museum, housed in the former coach houses and stable block, contains an extraordinary and varied collection.
Sandringham houses also an Adventure Play Area and a Sculpture Trail, which are both free of charge. The Sculpture Trail is a walk through the Arboretum passing sculptures, all made by chainsaw carvers from natural tree trunks.
The beautiful parish church of St Mary Magdalene, Sandringham, dates back to the 16th century and regularly used as a place of worship by the Royal Family and the Estate staff. It contains some notable features, such as a Florentine marble font, a Greek 9th-century font.
Furthermore Sandringham has a Café & Coffee Shop, offering high quality menus, and a Tearoom in the stabels.
