Orleans House Gallery houses the Richmond Borough Art Collection, offering a varied programme of historic and contemporary exhibitions, including also the Study Gallery exploring the history of the local area
Orleans House was built in 1710 by the architect John James in 1710 and commissioned by the politician and diplomat James Johnston. It was later named after the historical Louis Philippe, Duc d’Orléans, who lived here in exile from 1815-1817.
In 1720 the Baroque Octagon Room was constructed and has been recently restored. It was designed by the Scottish architect James Gibbs as a building to curry favour with the royal family. In this respect it was a resounding success, as both George I and George II visited, and Queen Caroline (wife of George II) and her children dined here in 1729.
The Octagon Room is available for civil ceremonies for up to 60 guests.
