Castles & Country Houses, Gardens & Parks
Cotehele House dating back to 1300, has been the in the hands of the Edgcumbe family, which also owned Mount Edgcumbe. It was handed over to the National Trust in lieu of death duties. The house has relatively little changed over the centuries and contains beautiful tapestries, armour and furniture, coming from the family collections.
Cotehele House has formally planted Terraces, an Upper Garden, a Cut Flower Garden, an orchard and a Valley Garden, including a stew pond and dovecot. It covers in total 10.4 ha (26 acres).
The grounds lead down to the historic Cotehele Quay, with the restored Victorian tamar sailing barge 'Shamrock' and the Discovery Centre, which tells the story of the Tamar Valley.
