Buckland Abbey
Castles & Country Houses, Gardens & Parks, Museums & Art Centres
Buckland Abbey dates from 1278 as a Cistercian abbey and was afterwards the home of Sir Richard Grenville and Sir Francis Drake, whose collateral descendants lived there until 1946. It came into the hands of the National Trust in 1948.
The Abbey is part museum, part house. It is filled with a beautiful collection, whereas it attracted world-wide attention in 2014 with the re-attribution of the self Self-portrait wearing a white feathered bonnet, by Rembrandt. The portrait is on display here.
One of the other treasures to be seen is the legendary Drake’s Drum.
In addition, several independent craft workshops are located in the converted ox sheds.
The abbey is surrounded by meadows, orchards and woodlands, including a wild garden and a kitchen garden.
